Witches, Magic, Murder, & Mystery · Megan and Kara

359. SPOOKY: Listener Stories, Vol. 21

·25 min
Halloween day gives the whole show a spooky, celebratory edge. Kara and Megan open with birthday banter and a quick run of accent jokes. They settle into the familiar pattern of saying that ghost-story episodes always seem to bring in more ghost stories. The inbox, of course, delivers. The hosts ask listeners to send spooky stories by email and joke that they probably need a separate address just for that pile, then admit they do not have the bandwidth for one more thing. That joke sets the tone for the episode. Madison from Owensboro, Kentucky, writes in first. She says she listens mainly while working, usually with one earbud in and her phone in her pocket. She started listening in late 2022 after another podcast autoplayed into WMMM and she turned it off. She was working nights alone at a gas station, so she was not exactly looking for extra spooks. A few days later, she gave the show another shot and stuck with it. That second try changed things. She points to episode 111, Setting Intentions for the New Year, and to Megan's word for the year, go. That single word became a push to keep moving. When a chance came up to help at another store, she went for it, and that led to more opportunities. She says she has been promoted twice, traveled across Western Kentucky and Tennessee, made amazing friends, and is now on track to run her own store. She also met a man she never would have pictured herself with at first glance, but she gave him a chance and he won her over. After that, the hosts shift into the stranger parts of their inbox. They mention a woman who started as a fan and ended up very much not a fan. They also bring up an angry message that sounded like someone trying to hex them. The whole thing feels like the kind of episode that can hold a sweet listener win and a deeply odd curse email in the same breath. That is part of the charm. The show keeps its footing by treating every strange note like it belongs at the same kitchen table. By the end, it feels like a Halloween hangout powered by reactions, listener mail, and the odd little joy of being surprised by what people send in.

As heard by us

A Halloween-day mix of ghost stories, birthday banter, and a simple idea that clearly mattered.

The episode opens with ghost stories and birthday banter, then settles into the hosts' familiar back-and-forth. Its strength is the live, uneven rhythm: warm, a little eerie, and more interested in reacting than polishing every edge.
