Episode 530- Cemetery Man (1994)

September 1, 2025·1 hr 5 min·5 clips
Katie and Alan open by admitting that *Cemetery Man* took a lot out of them. They do not hide it. The first half hooks them hard, then the second half starts giving the feeling back in the least comfortable way possible. They keep moving through the plot anyway, because that is what they do. The lead gets described as someone wearing his pants near his nipples, which they treat as both a visual fact and a personality trait. That is already the level of precision the movie earns. They pause to praise how endearing the character can be even while the whole thing behaves like a fever dream. Then the story slides into town politics, rowdy adult teens, and the mayor trying to think about reelection with a straight face. The mayor's daughter is discussed as a child, and Nyagi's reaction to her is treated as a gross, stupid mystery. Instead of desire, he pukes. They keep going on that absurdity with total commitment. The idea that he may be confusing arousal with vomiting becomes one of the episode's running jokes. Claudio just keeps trying to manage the situation while everything gets worse. The motorcycle ride that follows feels doomed from the start. A horse watches the collision, looks away, and seems to know better than to get involved. Katie and Alan love that detail. They imagine the horse going back to the barn and shutting the door like it has seen enough. The crash takes out the riders and turns the road into a joke with a body count. Then the conversation lands on the bus. It is full of nuns and Boy Scouts. The cop laughs. They do not let that pass. Instead, they lean into the black-comic ugliness of it and argue that the movie wants the audience to laugh even while it is being cruel. That tension is where the episode lives. The hosts keep checking whether they are still on board, and they are honest when they are not fully on board. Some of the film is too much. Some of it is exactly the right amount of too much. The episode ends with their usual warmth, but not before they make it clear that this is a movie that can beat you up a little and still leave you impressed. They close by thanking listeners and moving on with the kind of affection that only comes after surviving something weird together.

As heard by us

A blunt, funny conversation about a strange horror movie that is exhausting in exactly the way they say it is.

Katie and Alan spend the conversation on Cemetery Man half amused, half worn out. They keep circling back to how strange it is, and they clearly enjoy that strangeness: the lead is endearing, the joke energy is filthy, and the bus crash with the nuns and Boy Scouts gets the…
