Wear Many Hats

377. Kyle Raymond Fitzpatrick & Ben Dietz

·1 hr 8 min·5 clips
Kyle's green hair has been his signature for nearly a decade, becoming a branding tool that makes him instantly recognizable.
Kyle arrives first. The call starts the way real calls do: missed emails, quick apologies, and Ben maybe joining late while everyone finds the rhythm. Ben seems tied up, and Kyle jokes that lateness comes with the territory on their own podcast. It keeps the room loose before the interview settles. Then the host notices the hair. He remembers seeing Kyle at Air with Willa Bennett and asks if the green was already there. Kyle says yes, it was green, and somehow that tiny style check tells you the temperature of the episode: casual, specific, already mid-conversation. The best part is the New York stretch. Brooklyn gives one speaker a real physical exhale after the trip under the river from Manhattan. Rashad has a softer contradiction. He loves getting back to Brooklyn, but he still wants the Manhattan life he used to picture. Even the East Village has changed in his head, now crowded out by students. Parenting sharpens the point. The guest's teenagers grew up in New York, but plenty of the city is still theoretical to them. Timothy Chalamet becomes the comparison, helped along by a Sasha Jenkins piece about Hell's Kitchen and Brownsville. It lands without trying too hard: you can live inside New York and still have huge blank spots on your map. Rashad closes warmly, thanks Ben and Kyle, tells people to be nice if they run into them, and lets them plug Hip Replacement and their newsletters.

As heard by us

A borough debate becomes a thoughtful look at how much of a city can stay unseen.

Wear Many Hats turns a loose scheduling snag into a bigger conversation about how New York is lived, imagined, and kept at a distance by familiarity.
