Radio War Nerd EP 595 — Iran War Update: The Countdown

April 7, 2026·52 min·5 clips
Mark Ames reveals that Rupert Murdoch and Netanyahu convinced Trump to start the war with Iran.
April 7th, 2026 anchors the tape. Mark Ames starts in western New York State on the Erie Canal, with the canal's bicentennial, Ohio links, and actual mules all in the mix. Then the floor gives way. The conversation moves from local oddity to the claim that American politics was built to keep third-party pressure from turning into power. Third parties get choked off by design. One speaker ties that back to the Populist Party's threat in the 1880s and 1890s, when the two-party system protected itself. Foreign policy gets the bleakest treatment. The point is not that voters are only misinformed. It is that there is no democratic machinery they can grab. That is the ugly hinge. Change, in this version, would probably take something cataclysmic, and the speaker quickly says that kind of break would probably go badly. FDR enters through the Great Depression, as the last moment when a large part of the electorate might have moved into more radical politics. Even there, the praise curdles. FDR may have socialized parts of the system, but the argument here is that he also saved capitalism from itself. Nothing similar seems close. The speakers describe people as depoliticized and alienated, with no clear route from private disgust to actual power. Iran makes the whole thing sharper. By the end, the Iranians are described as refusing an ending on American terms because that would leave them open to another attack in two or three months. They want guarantees. The needed endpoint is a new security architecture, while Trump is portrayed as nowhere near accepting anything that looks like defeat. So the exit narrows until it almost vanishes. The final mood is not suspense. It is grim arithmetic: they do not see a clean way out, and they expect to return tomorrow if tomorrow still exists.

As heard by us

A bleak, useful listen on why the Iran standoff has no clean exit.

Radio War Nerd EP 595 treats the Iran standoff as a matter of leverage, security guarantees, and political dead ends, not some tidy countdown to resolution.
