Introducing White Devil

July 5, 2024·42 min·3 clips
In Belize, a young black man arrested for marijuana possession is jailed immediately — a woman connected to a billionaire who shot a police officer is expected to pay a fine.
The handoff starts quietly. Amory says Beyond All Repair has mostly wrapped, with room for updates if the case changes. Then White Devil takes over. It begins as a crime story in Belize, but the frame quickly widens around power, visibility, and who gets believed first. A woman is found on a pier near a body late at night. She is described as part of one of the most powerful families in the country. The setting does a lot of work here. The strip is built for tourists with money, especially the quieter southern end where Henry and Jasmine had been sitting. It is after midnight. The hotel cameras miss the angle that matters because the area is dark and far from the center of town. COVID hangs over everything. Belize is in a serious wave, with a curfew in place, though people are still nearby. A security guard sees Jasmine pacing. He works for Gene Lopez, an ex-cop whose firm is watching Mata Rocks, the resort next door. Lopez becomes one of the rare people willing to talk to the press. He says someone was said to be in the water. What he sees is hard to shake: a white woman with blood on her clothing, hands on her head, looking shocked. Then recognition lands. San Pedro is tight-knit, and Lopez realizes he knows her. The excerpt lets the pressure build through darkness, privilege, curfew, local knowledge, and incomplete surveillance without pretending any of it settles the case.
