Dillon tells Kitty: 'It was hard work bringing the law in here, and it's been hard work keeping it here—and it'd be ten times harder trying to bring it back if it ever got shoved out.'

A singer is stranded here. Kitty says she is sweet, says she came from Chicago or somewhere, and says she only plans to work there for a week. Matt listens while the talk stays easy for a moment. Then King Mallard shows up at the bar with Mr. Kelby, and that sight brings up a basic question about why a jailed man is suddenly out in public. Matt asks for an explanation. Kelby says the mayor came down to his office, fixed bail, and released Mallard and his son. That still does not settle anything. The marshal wants to know who put up the money and what kind of deal has been cut behind the scenes. Kelby calls the release a misunderstanding and says everyone hopes the matter can be handled for the town's benefit, but the wording only makes things look worse. Miss Kitty stays close. Her side of the room gives the story a social edge, because the stranger in town and the freed prisoner are both part of a place where everybody sees everybody else. No one sounds relaxed. The scene stays tense through short questions, quick answers, and the sense that something important has been arranged without the marshal's blessing. The episode moves fast. Its force comes from the friction between law, reputation, and the easy language people use when they want a problem to disappear. Matt keeps pressing. The whole story builds toward the same hard question: whether the place is being governed or managed.
