Fort Laramie - Gold

April 8, 2026·30 min·2 clips

Captain Quince says he trusts Red Cloud until the next white man crosses into treaty land looking for gold.

1. Fort Laramie, a CBS radio drama starring Raymond Burr as Captain Lee Quince, presents an episode centered on gold prospectors threatening to violate a peace treaty with Red Cloud's Sioux nation. 2. Captain Lee Quince, played by Raymond Burr, commands cavalry at Fort Laramie in Wyoming Territory; Sergeant Gorse, played by Vic Perron, is his trusted non-commissioned officer. 3. The episode's core question is whether the peace treaty between the U.S. Army and Red Cloud will survive the lure of gold in Sioux territory. 4. Quince escorts a westbound wagon train to the edge of the Oregon Trail, where Sioux warriors watch from the canyon rim, and warns the driver to stay off the closed Bozeman Trail. 5. The wagon train driver admits he has 'gold fever' and had hoped to pan for a fortune in Montana, but Quince tells him flatly he would not reach the first bend of the Bozeman Trail alive. 6. Back at Fort Laramie, Quince explains to the Major that he trusts Red Cloud to honor the treaty but does not trust the white men with gold fever who will eventually break it. 7. A stranger arrives at the fort and approaches a cavalry sergeant with a bribery scheme, offering money for four strong horses and hints that he has gold in his pouches — the same kind of prospector Quince had warned about. 8. The sergeant plays along long enough to discover the stranger has gold, whiskey for trade with Native Americans, and mining equipment, then reports the encounter to Quince. 9. When the Major refuses to imprison the stranger without proof of criminal intent, Quince can only warn him off the post; the stranger acquires horses elsewhere and heads north into treaty land. 10. Lieutenant Seiberts's patrol spots two men with four horses and four mules moving north along Rawhide Creek toward Sioux territory, and the men ignore signal shots and hand signs to turn back. 11. Quince proposes riding to Red Cloud with only Sergeant Gorse — arguing that a full patrol would provoke rather than prevent a war — and the Major reluctantly grants permission. 12. Quince and Gorse ride under a white flag into Black Hills country, dropping their gun belts at the stream before waiting for Red Cloud. 13. Red Cloud arrives with two braves, backed by warriors hidden in the surrounding hills, and questions where the honor in white men honoring treaty boundaries has gone. 14. Quince negotiates the release of the two prospectors, who are alive in Red Cloud's custody, promising they will be imprisoned at Fort Laramie. 15. Red Cloud delivers a stark warning: 'Patience stretches. In time, like an old hide, it breaks and is no more,' and states that he will not parley again if white men enter treaty land. 16. The episode ends with Red Cloud's ultimatum — next time, warriors will not stay in the hills and white trespassers will be found dead — leaving Quince to carry the warning back to the fort. 17. The drama features spare, naturalistic dialogue and period-appropriate sound design with cavalry commands, saloon ambience, and outdoor frontier scenes. 18. Raymond Burr plays Quince as a pragmatic, morally serious officer who respects Red Cloud and views gold fever as a policy problem more than a personal failing. 19. Listeners who enjoy classic old-time radio drama, 1950s Western storytelling, and historical frontier politics will find this episode engaging. 20. Listeners expecting modern audio drama production values or who are unfamiliar with the old-time radio format may find the style dated.

As heard by us

A horse search turns uneasy when the buyer rejects the recommended ranch and the road west.

Fort Laramie turns a search for horses into a tight little mystery about where a stranger is really going. He wants four strong animals, waves off the local crowbait, and sidesteps Captain Lee Quince's recommendation of the Souter Ranch because west is not his direction.
