Versus Mini Episode # 12: 10 Crazy Canadian Horror Movies

March 21, 2026·21 min·1 clip
This movie tells the story of a small isolated radio station in rural Ontario, where they are trapped by a virus that travels through words.
But not today. Jamie and Jessica park the usual two-movie Versus fight and make a mini list about Canadian horror instead. Since they are from Canada, the subject has a little hometown heat behind it. Cronenberg nearly swallows the room: Jamie says it would be easy to fill the whole list with David Cronenberg, then pulls back so other films can get in. The episode wanders before it settles. There is holiday-season chatter, time off work, and a bit about how they managed to record more episodes. Then the notes start doing their thing. One found-footage pick gets love because Derek and Cliff's friendship feels lived in, partly because they are friends in real life. That everyday ease gives the movie room to slide into the supernatural without turning stiff. They also make a case for found footage itself, saying this one moves cleanly enough to work even for listeners who usually bounce off the format. Then Pontypool arrives. Number five is the 2008 Bruce McDonald film, loosely based on Tony Burgess's novel Pontypool Changes Everything. The premise sounds like a hard sell: a small, isolated radio station in rural Ontario gets trapped in a story about a virus that moves through words. They know how odd that sounds. The reason it works, they say, is that the film takes one piece of the book instead of trying to cram in the whole thing. The unseen parts do a lot of the damage. The infected people are frightening in description, and the movie is smart enough to leave plenty of that horror out of frame. The book still gets its due too, with a nudge toward checking it out if the idea sticks. By the end, they are talking about reviews, downloads, and comments, because those are the signals they can actually see. The signoff rambles, but it fits: Canadian horror love, couch-level banter, and real affection under the jokes.

As heard by us

A lively Canadian horror mini episode with easy banter and a standout Pontypool discussion.

Versus keeps things loose and good natured, with twins Jamie and Jessica swapping Canadian horror picks and clearly enjoying the argument as much as the movies.
