#29 - The Mystery of Charles Coughlin's Coffin

Kenton Young and Christina Kuzzi present the story of Charles Coughlin, British actor born in France in 1842. Coughlin pursued acting against his father's wishes, performing for 17 years in England before immigrating to the United States in 1876. During a fortune telling, he was told he would die in the American south and be buried there but find no rest until returning home - a prediction that haunts him throughout his life. In America, he becomes successful on Broadway and New York stages, eventually discovering Prince Edward Island's Fortune's Bridge community, which he helps develop as a retreat for theater people. He experiences bankruptcy in 1890 but returns to acting. In 1899, while performing in Galveston Texas, Coughlin falls ill and dies on November 27, 1899. His family cannot decide where to send his remains (PEI, New York, or Yorkshire), so they place him in a temporary mausoleum. A year later, the devastating Galveston hurricane of September 11, 1900 (the fourth deadliest in US history) strikes, and Charles's coffin becomes caught in the chaos - a cruel twist on the fortune teller's prophecy about his inability to find rest.
