The Carousel Club Part -9

July 26, 2021·4 min
The episode continues the Carousel Club investigation, beginning by establishing that Abe Saffron, a major Sydney crime figure charged with fraud and narcotics offences, was not just connected to the Carousel Club but actually owned it. Jim Anderson ran the club on Saffron's behalf. Loretta then provides what the host treats as a bombshell revelation: she believes Juanita was blackmailing Saffron. According to Loretta, Juanita had been in a relationship with a man from the Builders' Union who told her that a building being constructed on Victoria Street was using inferior materials. Juanita sent a dossier about this to Saffron, and Loretta believes that is when Saffron became interested in silencing her. Aunty Pip and the family had long suspected a Kings Cross underworld connection but had no specific motive before this. The host then goes to verify Loretta's claim by reviewing a 1976 police interview with Lloyd Marshall. In that interview, Lloyd told police that Saffron had been blackmailed by Juanita using a document and that she had asked for a large sum of money. This partially corroborates Loretta's account. However, the host notes that Lloyd subsequently denied having made those statements to Loretta or even having had a relationship with her. The host is left uncertain about how much of Loretta's account to trust, given her own history of changing her story. Loretta also offers a theory about why the police investigation stalled: she alleges that police had protected both Saffron and Anderson in various matters over the years, and suggests that if they had genuinely wanted to solve Juanita's case, they would have done so. The interview concludes and Loretta leaves. Aunty Pip immediately calls the host to share what she has gathered. The host summarises that between Aunty Pip's interview with Loretta and their own meeting with Vinnie, the picture of who was behind the Carousel Club and what may have motivated them is becoming clearer, though still unconfirmed.
