Season 4 Episode 1: Alone With Everybody (RERUN)

·58 min·5 clips
Liz returns home to see a gaunt elderly woman staring from the window, but her husband's car is not in the driveway.
The true story begins inside the house. The strange activity seems to collect near the cramped spot between the foot of the stairs and the downstairs bathroom, giving the place a nasty little pressure point. One man doubles over outside. He says the pain came on as soon as he went near the bathroom window, and the others return convinced they have found where the trouble is gathering. Bill, amazed, says they are right. The men tell him they sensed four entities in all. Three are described as an elderly woman and two young men. Those three, they say, have now gone. The fourth is different: darker, stranger, and not part of the property itself. It may have followed Bill for the past twenty years. That claim shifts the haunting away from the house and back toward Bill, toward a past he may have been carrying without quite understanding it. The protection work is careful and theatrical in the way these stories often are. One of the men draws a pentacle in chalk on the kitchen floor, sets incense at each point, and asks any spirits to leave. Twenty minutes later, he goes. Bill is left alone with the obvious question: why would anything malicious have attached itself to him at all? The answer comes as a name. Alex Sanders, a figure from Bill's early twenties in London, had been introduced to him while Bill was trying to make his way as an artist. Sanders called himself King of the Witches. He had followed Gerald Gardner before breaking from Gardner's teachings and taking his own path into ceremonial magic. The episode gets its chill from that link. What starts as trouble in a family home becomes something closer and harder to shrug off: maybe the house was never the beginning of the story.

As heard by us

A measured haunting that ends by tying the house to Bill's past.

An ordinary house haunting slowly opens into something more personal. The investigation moves from the stairs and downstairs bathroom to the possibility that the darker presence never belonged to the property at all, but followed Bill for twenty years.
