Unexplained

Season 09 Episode 17: Unsettled Dust

·31 min·2 clips
As Ron saw the second plane strike the Twin Towers, his horror turned to panic over his missing wife caught in the chaos.
The first shock comes by television. Ron is halfway through leaving a voicemail when a cry from the waiting room pulls him back. The replay leaves no room for comfort: a second plane flies into the south tower, and black smoke starts swallowing the upper floors of both towers. No one says much. The room seems to understand, quickly and terribly, that this is not an accident. Ron cannot stay with that thought. The scale of it slips out of focus, because Sneha is silent and that silence is suddenly all there is. He keeps calling home. Each unanswered message feels like one more attempt to bargain with the phone, as if the next ring might bring her voice back. He calls Ansu. Sneha's mother has heard nothing and says she last spoke with her daughter the day before. Then one fact lands hard: Ron has not spoken to his wife in twenty-four hours. Part of him wants to go downtown, toward the last place he knows Sneha had been. The city will not let him. Subway service is suspended, roads are likely closed, and New York is locked down. At Jacoby, with hospitals bracing for casualties, duty keeps him there. So he waits, stuck between disaster and one impossible hope.
