Mystery Sounds + Some Personal News

March 15, 2022·43 min·3 clips
Researchers 3D-printed an Egyptian mummy's vocal tract to recreate the sound of a 3,000-year-old voice.
This starts as a special check-in. The panel opens with personal news, says regular episodes return in two weeks, and reminds listeners that the Discord community is still in the mix. The mood stays light, mostly. A joke about the heavy news being maybe eight to ten pounds keeps the announcement from getting too solemn too quickly. Then trivia takes over. The group talks about joining the World's Largest Trivia Contest in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where their new team did remarkably well among hundreds. That leads into the game: instead of normal trivia questions, they play mystery sounds and let everyone stumble through guesses. The credit card sound pays off nicely. After guesses about money machines and bill counters, the answer is a credit card imprinter, the old hand operated device that pressed raised card numbers onto carbon paper. You can hear why everyone likes it. The next sound seems like a movie trailer, a lawnmower, and somebody falling off a building at the same time, which is exactly the wrong-but-close mess this panel enjoys. The clue narrows it down fast. It comes from an early-2000s movie, involves a big-bearded magical character, and eventually lands on Hagrid lighting a fire with his umbrella in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The backstory is the good part. The director wanted spell sounds that avoided anything modern, futuristic, electronic, or Star Wars-like, so the sound team had to make magic feel handmade. That is very Underunderstood. One tiny sound opens up old payment hardware, movie sound design, and the strange satisfaction of realizing why an effect feels familiar. The closing points listeners to 20,000 Hertz for more sound stories, including the Seinfeld theme, sounds of other planets, and a McDonald's jingle, then circles back to recruiting help for 90FM Trivia.

As heard by us

A loose mystery-sound episode finds its screen-culture spark in the handmade magic behind one Harry Potter cue.

Underunderstood turns a special update into a mystery-sound hangout, with the hosts moving from community business and the 90FM trivia contest to a run of odd little audio IDs.
