The booth opens at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Ottawa and Detroit are the matchup, and the first thing to notice is the schedule: the Senators are on game five in seven days. They are doing it without Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot, and Lassie Thompson. Dean has the play-by-play, and the period starts with Ottawa dumping the puck in. Detroit clears, recovers in its own end, and Dylan Cousins turns back under pressure before carrying it to center. The puck keeps rolling deep, Ottawa changes, and the Wings work the breakout back through Gibson and Justin Volk. A long pass gets whistled down for icing, or at least should have been. The next sequence goes through the neutral zone and looks offside. A penalty question hangs over the play. Nick Cousins ends up in the middle of the complaint after Appleton says he chicken-winged the stick. The officials sort it out and Ottawa gets the power play. The Senators have not exactly been sharp with the extra man lately, coming in 1-for-7 against the Rangers. They sit 11th overall at 22.6 percent, though the road number falls to 19.5 percent. Carter Yakumchuk gets first-unit time at the left point. He brings the big right-shot bomb and the confidence that comes with it. Ottawa works the puck around the umbrella and into the bumper. The Senators keep the pressure alive while the Wings block and clear. They keep finding looks from the same kind of bumper lane that helped Shane Pinto score the night before. Detroit eventually tries to cash in on its own power play, but the goal is challenged and denied for offside. At the end of one, Ottawa has the kill, the power play goal, and a 1-0 lead.
