Larry Metherd's Story — The Man Who Jumped From Planes and Saved Lives

·12 min·1 clip

The farm boy who used to pump water by hand was now helping war refugees find their way to new worlds and new lives.

This episode tells the extraordinary life story of Lawrence 'Larry' Metherd, a 96-year-old man who appeared to be just a friendly neighbor gardening with his dog but had a hidden past as a Merchant Marine transporting war refugees, a Korean War paratrooper who jumped from planes 18 times, a diesel mechanic for the Denver Fire Department, and a devoted husband of 65 years. Through vivid storytelling, host Steve Rode reveals how ordinary people often have remarkable histories hidden in plain sight.
