Top 5 Comics Podcast - Episode 201 - Silk, Mighty Barbarians, Green Lantern, Kaj Kunstmann @ Wonder Con 2023

·2 hr 13 min·6 clips
Tom King helped facilitate a proposal at Comic Con by writing 'will you marry me' on a Batman book cover.
The show starts loose. Nathan Gooden drops the Vault Comics intro tag, then the crew falls into the kind of naming joke that feels partly planned and partly caught in the room. Tyler Brown is back. CBS gets called master of ceremony, pushes back right away, and everybody pokes at whether the bit has legs. Then they try out listener names. Top fivers is a maybe. Funny, but not locked in. Silk takes over from there. The host clearly likes the character, though the issue gets a slightly cautious read because it seems to start from a place that does not quite line up with the previous ending. The train sequence lands. The art gets real love for switching between detail and simplicity without making the book feel too grounded. The costume talk has the most spark. That 1950s Silk look, with the dress turned into superhero gear, feels smart, wearable, and very cosplay-ready. The score slides down as they talk it through. It starts near a three and ends at two-and-a-half, mostly because the setup is fun but may not be the cleanest first stop for a new Silk reader. Still, the read works. The host thinks Silk's history is lighter than some characters, which keeps the book approachable even with the continuity snag. Last Ronin closes the episode. The warning is plain: with a video game adaptation coming years down the road, the book could get tougher to find. Amazon price chatter follows. The Last Ronin Lost Years gets some love too, especially for splitting time between what comes after that story and what came before it. The whole episode has that fan-practical rhythm: review, collecting advice, and a friendly argument over which jokes deserve to survive.

As heard by us

A loose, warm comics-shop conversation with a sharp eye for Silk's art and costume work.

Top 5 Comics Podcast settles into an easy comics-shop rhythm, moving from Silk into brief stops for TMNT and Last Ronin. The Silk stretch lands best.
