Amos 'n' Andy - Sapphire's Sister Moves In

·28 min·3 clips
Andy disastrously misquotes 'Hiawatha' as 'Itchy Goochy' and 'Columbus,' yet Hortense finds it delightfully cultured.
The evening begins with Rexall polish. A sponsor-led opening drops into Kingfish, Sapphire, and Mama settling in for a quiet night at home. Then the floor gives way. Once Sapphire and Mama head to the movies, Kingfish spots his chance and starts coaching Andy for Hortense. Culture is the bait. Andy gets poetry books and instructions to memorize fragments he can drop into conversation. Naturally, he gets tangled up right away. Longfellow becomes a joke about three fellows, and Hiawatha sounds less like literature than a pileup of grand words Andy cannot quite steer. Kingfish keeps at it. He wants Andy to toss out wisdom and bon mots as if polish can be slapped onto plain nerves. Andy, being Andy, asks the useful question: if there is supposed to be a lull, how is he supposed to know one has arrived? Kingfish has an answer. A kick on the shins will tell Andy when to start spouting Hiawatha, which is exactly the kind of fussy little plan this comedy feeds on. The joke tightens because every lesson meant to make Andy sound refined makes both men look less refined. The language does most of the falling down: mock-elevated talk, botched literary references, blunt literal replies. A social visit starts to look like a staged disaster. Rexall, Cherisote, and Stag Brushless Shave Cream keep interrupting with tidy period-radio cheer, so the whole thing feels tucked between medicine-chest advice and network ritual. It is brisk, theatrical, and silly in a very practiced way. The fun is hearing one small wish to impress someone become a machine of cues, corrections, and overconfidence.

As heard by us

A poetry lesson turns into a compact old-radio farce.

This Amos and Andy episode keeps the action close to home, letting the comedy rise from timing, literal corrections, and Kingfish trying to turn Andy into a cultured talker for Hortense.
