The Wheel Weaves Podcast: A Wheel of Time Podcast · Dani and Brett

Ep. 1401 - AMoL Prologue: By Grace and Banners Fallen (Part 1 of 3)

August 12, 2025·1 hr 13 min·6 clips
Dani and Brett get emotional as they start the prologue of the final Wheel of Time book, A Memory of Light.
Isam is the problem. Dani starts with the old setup in her head: the dream figure over here, the real-world figure over there, neat enough to manage. Then Brett walks in with the bad news. The episode turns into a quick, funny argument about Isam, Luke, Slayer, Perrin, Young Bull, and Hopper, all without stepping past the chapter they are covering. Dani wants rules she can pin down. Brett keeps pointing out that dream access, real-world presence, death, and identity are separate questions here. Annoying? Yes. On purpose? Also yes. Dani's tidy version had one guy in the dream and one guy in the waking world. That version does not hold. Brett uses Perrin to pry it open: Perrin can be himself in the world, Young Bull in the dream, and still not line up cleanly with Hopper. Hopper only fits because he is dead. Isam, Brett says, is not dead, so Dani has to toss the little housing chart she built in her head. She is not happy about it, which is fair. The best bit is Dani trying to explain an agreement where every identity gets assigned a place, as if reality came with labels. Brett lets the idea breathe, then punctures it. That is the fun here: first-reader theory, longtime-reader restraint, a correction, then another attempt to make the impossible usable. The clip is spoiler-safe but lore-heavy. It does not solve Slayer. It shows why Slayer makes readers fight with their own filing system. The two-monkeys-in-one-barrel image turns the confusion into a joke that still kind of works. By the end, the recap has become a small seminar on identity, dream rules, and Wheel of Time explanations refusing to stay where you put them.
