A Martian pursues fleeing humans, picks them up one by one, and tosses them into a great metallic cylinder on its back.
The narrator and a fearful curate continue their desperate flight from the Martian invasion, hiding from black smoke and fighting machines. After a terrifyingly close encounter near Kew, they witness Martians capturing humans. Their journey for food and shelter ends catastrophically when a Martian cylinder strikes the house they are in, burying them in the ruins.
