158. My USA Autumn Adventure Trip: Mystic, Connecticut & Other CT Towns

December 17, 2024·28 min·5 clips
Jess opens by noting that this trip has gone on long enough that it needs several episodes to cover. She picks up after Boston and Salem. Mystic is the first stop in this stretch. The day includes a local tour and a story about a pig man in the river, which Jess remembers with a laugh. Ruth comes across as a steady travel companion and a useful guide. The tour stays playful rather than truly spooky, even with the folklore. Kids were there too, so the mood never gets too dark. From there, Jess and Ruth head back, settle in, and call it a night. The next day starts more slowly. Milford gets dropped because the itinerary needs trimming. Guilford gets the first visit instead. Jess says it is one of her favorite places from the last trip, and Ruth likes it too. The green is the main draw. Around Halloween, it is covered in scarecrows made by local people. Jess notices a lot of Taylor Swift-themed ones this year. The classic New England church at the end of the green anchors the scene. Shops, boutiques, cafes, and grocery stores ring the area. They do some shopping. Jess also asks Ruth to help film a few shots for her documentary. Then the road continues to a coastal island stop Jess recognizes from the previous trip after a local recommendation. She even checks an old Facebook album in the car to confirm the name, which she treats as a very normal and very useful move. The weather is sunny and the view looks out over Long Island Sound. Fireworks are going off around the area. The stop feels beachy, rocky, and quiet in the way small coastal places often do. Jess keeps treating these ordinary stops as part of the adventure, not just filler between bigger landmarks. The episode ends with her saying she will stop there for now. She says the next section will cover Cape Cod, Rhode Island on the way back, and Martha's Vineyard. The whole thing feels like a voice note from the road, with enough detail to make the memories feel immediate again.
