Stevie Bees: What Is a Safe Space? | Nonbinary Activist, Gender Doula, & Creating LGBTQ+ Safe Spaces

·1 hr 21 min·4 clips
Caroline welcomes Stevie Bees, a community organizer, activist, and gender doula based in London, Ontario. The conversation starts with safe space as something lived, not just declared. Stevie traces the work from a clothing brand into nonprofit organizing, public education, and direct support for trans people. The focus stays on social, medical, and legal transition without losing sight of the person in front of it. The episode keeps making room for people who need care to be part of the work. Stevie names accessible activism for Spoonies as part of that responsibility. From there, the conversation opens outward into mutual aid and sustainability. Stevie describes safe spaces as places, objects, and people. A city can hold you. A forest can hold you. So can a room, a blanket, a book, a song, or the moon. But mostly, safe spaces are people who show up with steadiness. The conversation then turns to the clothing project that helped spread that message. Stevie talks about sending shirts to influencers and watching TikTok audiences respond with warmth. Some people saw the shirts and felt safer because of the messages on them. Stevie then tried a more ambitious celebrity outreach push, mailing fan letters and shirts to David Tennant's P.O. box. That eventually led to a surge of orders after a picture linked the project to George's Instagram. Over the next two weeks, the project brought in more than $50,000 in sales. Stevie donated $10,000 to a scholarship for trans students and closed by saying community, joy, creation, and mutual care are forms of resistance, because no one person can carry the work alone.
