Chapter 9: To Be Living and Dead

March 29, 2022·21 min·1 clip
Minnie tells Paul that Ruth hid a medical journal from him, sending him to a sanatorium.
The episode opens with a rich narrated description of a liminal space between existence and void, inhabited by entities called the Long Shadows. Edward August Hall is one such being who has watched the Fort's players from this perch for so long he has catalogued their endless failures. He notes that Alfie, Mother Cyprian, and Jacob each carry strings of failures like beaded pearls. He speculates about an entity named Adam who has returned to the Fort, and observes two new characters entering the fold who seem ripe for whatever game he is contemplating. The narrative then shifts to Paul arriving back at the house and being intercepted by Minnie in the hallway. She reveals that Ruth knew about Dr. Keenly's journal and deliberately chose not to give it to Paul. Minnie frames this as Ruth being protective and suggests Paul reminds her of a son. She then tells Paul about Mother Cyprian—described as a collector and the abbess of the Sisterhood of the Living Waters—and instructs him to go to Riverside Sanatorium, enter through a side gate by the rose garden, and mention that Minnie sent him. She assures him the locked front gate is for vagrants, not for him. Paul is grateful and agrees to keep the conversation secret from Ruth. The episode then shifts underground to Garrett, who has been moved to a new, completely dark cell while sleeping, with no memory of the transfer and no sense of how much time has passed. The only sensation he has is the sound of water dripping from above, which he uses to confirm he is still alive. A shaft of light opens and Mother Cyprian speaks from above. Garrett accuses her of kidnapping but she reframes his admission to Riverside as a social contract placing his well-being in their care. She encourages him to reflect and accept the darkness. When Garrett begs to be let out and swears not to tell anyone, Mother Cyprian dismisses his oath. She then delivers a philosophical argument: since she cannot perceive him once the room is sealed, she cannot know if he is alive or dead, making him simultaneously both states—a direct allusion to Schrodinger's cat. She implies something in the room with him could kill him and leaves before he can confirm whether he is alone. The episode ends on Garrett calling into the darkness in fear.
