The Thieves Guild Friday Binge: Chapters 63-67

·57 min·3 clips
Odo says 37 Merchant Store properties and the Merchant Tower effectively belong to the Craft Guild.
Karch begins the day with sunlight on the wood by his window and tea at his elbow. The merchant tower is calm, the counters are counting, and the river ships are moving goods steadily enough to ease the memory of Trader's Bridge. Hemley brings word of a visitor from the craft, and the man who enters is old, thin, ink-stained, and burdened with a satchel full of papers. He is not a captain, and he is not there for a routine negotiation. His arrival turns the morning from comfort into business. Vesper, by contrast, finds himself settling into the seat more easily than he expected. Odo helps with the practical work of the office, then heads off to reconcile reports with his usual cheerful intensity. Vesper watches the door close and laughs louder than he has in a long time. Rogers is moving in another direction entirely. He knows he needs to disappear from everything he knows, and not in the usual way, with safe rooms, informants, and a horse hidden three blocks away. The Outerfields give him something the city never could. Out there, people care about their work first and their titles not at all. He rides with the fact of his failure sitting on his chest like a stone. He had planned, worked, volunteered, campaigned, and reached for power with both hands. It broke against him anyway. What remains is coin, a good horse, and the clear knowledge that he has nothing left to lose except the chance to recover what was taken. The road gives him time to think, and it does not make that thought easier. The smell of smoke reaches him before the scene itself does. Owl, smoke, and something sour and unclean hang in the air. Noise follows, and the ride carries him toward trouble that is already underway. What he finds is a robbery stripped of romance. The camp is organized, careful, and practical, which only makes it sadder. These are people who have run out of options. They sort the stolen goods into neat piles as if shame can be made tidy by hand. By late afternoon they leave with the horse and the salvage, and the shadows are already stretching across the dry grass. Raylan leads the horse while the thin man watches them go. At dusk they reach a spring and fill every container they have. They return to Dragon Road by moonrise and head west in silence. The wagon creaks, the wheels turn, and somewhere ahead lies a stone weigh station with a well that still holds water. It is not much. But it is enough.

As heard by us

Ledgers, titles, and water do the damage here.

This stretch turns administration into pressure. A quiet morning in Karch's office gives way to an ancient visitor with an overstuffed satchel, and the story widens from ledgers and contracts to status, loss, and the plain effort of recovering what has been taken.
