The Teacher's Accuser Episode 3: Cross-Examination

June 9, 2023·1 hr 5 min·5 clips
AB breaks down in court, declaring, 'This is my life and I want you to believe what I'm saying.'
Host Claire Harvey joins journalists Hedley Thomas, David Murray, and Matthew Condon to analyze the cross-examination of AB, the central witness in the carnal knowledge trial of Chris Dawson, the former Northern Beaches high school teacher who was convicted in 2022 of murdering his wife Lynette. Public Defender Claire Wasley, described by the panel as having hidden steel beneath a polite exterior, challenged AB across two days primarily on timeline grounds: if sex began when AB was 17 rather than 16, no criminal offence existed under the laws of the time. Wasley focused on a newly-raised topless photograph AB said had led to her first contact with Dawson, noting AB had never mentioned it in years of prior statements, and AB acknowledged memory is a fickle thing. The defence challenged AB's description of driving lessons, arguing her learner's permit could not have been obtained until November 1980, leaving only a narrow window for the alleged offences before Dawson was no longer her teacher. Judge Sarah Huggett intervened to ask both sides whether a driving lesson required a learner's permit, and prosecutors in re-examination introduced a 1990 statement in which AB had already placed the relationship in that year. Wasley also sought to reframe Dawson as a caring counsellor rather than a predator, a narrative AB rejected. The panel noted AB was fluent in the language of therapy and viewed her younger self as a separate victim. Producer Kristen Amiet highlighted that Dawson had refused to teach his wife Lynette to drive while simultaneously teaching AB, casting his alleged chivalry in a different light. Chris Dawson, present via audio-visual link from Long Bay prison, was observed communicating with Wasley during breaks. Cross-examination became a back-and-forth in which Wasley repeatedly proposed revised timelines and AB refused each. The episode ends when AB, after being told she was making things up, broke down and declared she wanted it to end, drawing the courtroom to a halt.
