444: ‘You’re Going to Have the Niggles’, With Christina Warren

March 29, 2026·1 hr 37 min·5 clips
John Gruber coins 'marketing spite' to describe Apple disabling working GPU cores in the iPhone 17 E—and admits he personally would keep returning units until he got the one with six cores.
A Yankees hat opens the room. John says hello to Christina, catches the hat situation right away, and baseball gets to be the first topic before the phones show up. Christina watched the Netflix game because she wanted to know whether Netflix had gotten better at live sports streaming. On that narrow point, she thought it had. John had a different problem: the stream may have worked, but the telecast drove him nuts, score bug included. That is the shape of the excerpt. They are not racing to Apple talk. Sports complaints, taste, interface gripes, and phone advice all sit at the same table. Once they get to phones, the advice stays practical. Christina sees the newer base phone as a real upgrade for someone coming from an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14. MagSafe still annoys her. Leaving it out last year felt, to her, like buying a car and then being told the floor mats somehow cost extra. John likes the analogy, and they work from there: some omissions feel cheap, while some tradeoffs at least make sense. The better screen is one of the easy wins. You feel it without needing to win a spec sheet argument. The camera is the bigger pull. John says the extra 200 dollars buys camera improvements people will actually notice, including the second lens, the ultra wide, and better low-light results from the main camera. His standard is plain in a good way. You do not have to be a camera nerd, or inspect pixels, to see the difference when the flash is off. The 17e does not get written off. Its one-times camera sounds genuinely good for the price, even if the higher model has obvious advantages. The close is easygoing: Christina's recovery sounds better, the school-kid color advice gets a shrug, sponsors are thanked, and the Yankees get the last little wish of luck.
