S2|E2: The Seed

October 30, 2024·47 min·3 clips
Craig's father drove him and his sister across Florida under false pretences and dropped them at the Seed — a drug program Craig's friends had already warned was turning kids into robots.
A warning comes first. The excerpt opens by telling listeners that physical and emotional abuse will be described, so the episode starts with the harm plainly named before the Seed's own language takes over. Then the pressure hits. A voice tells someone to stop letting other people make decisions, turning recovery into obedience and blame. Former participants describe rap sessions where one person stood to answer while the group came at them. It was intimate, harsh, and public. Getting straight becomes less like help and more like a demand to prove effort while absorbing confrontation. Art Barker wanted the Seed to grow. The host says his ambitions reached well beyond the little yellow house in Fort Lauderdale, and Barker's own words point to that hunger for expansion. He wanted seeds everywhere. To do that, he needed people who believed in him enough to carry the program when he was not there. John Underwood comes in through a recorded phone call, naming himself as a senior staff member and Barker's right-hand man. He claims unusual authority. The narration says senior staff sat inside Barker's inner circle, trusted to run the Seed's day-to-day operation. Underwood says there were six senior staff members during his time, that he was the only male among them, and that he is the only one still alive. The host treats that surviving voice carefully: useful, revealing, and still not the whole story.
