S2|E1: Intake

October 30, 2024·53 min·4 clips
Valerie thought she was visiting her brother in rehab on Halloween 1982 — instead she was slammed to the floor, stripped-searched, and told she was a drug addict who would never leave.
Halloween of 1982 opens the door. Valerie is 17, in the car with her mother, told they are going across Florida to visit her brother. She is glad. She knows he has been away because of trouble, but she does not know where. The memory begins with trust. From Daytona Beach to Sarasota, the trip is presented as a family visit. Then the host pulls back. Before that Halloween, Valerie's family had already been split open by her father's failing health and death. Their last goodbye is gentle. She runs back from an elevator, and he holds her face, kisses her, and tells her he loves her. Then the call comes. At home, Valerie waits on the stairs like he might still walk in at 3 o'clock, the way he always did. He does not. That loss shakes the whole house. Her mother changes hard. Grief, religion, remarriage to an 82-year-old preacher, and anger begin to shape the home Valerie is trying to live inside. Valerie falls into depression without having the words for it. She remembers the world losing its color, even the sky and clouds going flat. The cruelty is intimate. When she cries for her father, her mother does not comfort her. She punishes her and tells her not to grieve. That is where the episode hurts most. A child's sorrow gets treated like rebellion, and a family's private collapse starts pointing toward something much bigger.
