TSP25: The Summer Of Ben

·1 hr 2 min·4 clips
Ben Bright says he had no nutrition on the bike and hit blurry vision at 90k.
Russ picks up where the Nice blow-up left off. He goes back to Ben Bright's 1992 season and starts from the race that set the whole thing moving, with Nice measured at 4 km in the water, 120 km on the bike, and 32 km on the run. Ben's own March 2023 comments on YouTube frame the opening, with the lead swim group, the bike break with Yves Cordier, and the fast, risky descent along the Promenade des Anglais. The speed is real. Russ keeps circling back to the hairpins, the downhill lines, and the moments when Ben was inexperienced enough on descents to get caught out by the course. That detail matters because it shows how narrow the gap was between control and a blown race. The story then widens beyond Nice. It moves into the VAR race, where Yves Cordier climbs strongly, Hugues Sarazin posts the fastest bike time, and Ben sits close enough to matter while the field behind him begins to splinter. Mechanical trouble and plain struggle both show up, with punctures, dropped-out athletes, and riders fighting the cold as the course rises. The temperature keeps falling. At 2,111 metres, the athletes meet an icy wind, turn around, and head back down, and the front of the race stays remarkably stable. The top three do not change. Their 10-kilometre runs come in nearly identical times, which gives the episode a neat closing shape around form, climbing ability, and who could still produce at the end. Ben Bright also gets placed in a bigger historical frame. Russ and the archival report treat him as a new kind of athlete, someone who came up through triathlon training itself rather than arriving with a swimming or running background already built in. That is part of the episode's appeal. It is not just a result story, but a look at how the sport was beginning to produce its own younger generation. The show notes matter here. Russ points to images of Ben climbing with Yves Cordier and a bike he thinks is a Kuahara, based on the head badge. Then the memory jumps sideways. A 1982 wish for an ET special edition Kuahara BMX, the Macon crop top and trunks kit, and Ben's flame-coloured mullet all turn the race into a visual scrapbook. Ironbridge on July 18 arrives only six days after VAR. The atmosphere shifts again, this time toward the daily grind of triathlon, with turbo-fans, MTV, and the noise of athletes trying to make a life out of a hard sport. The ending is dry-eyed. Russ lands on the old reality that most triathletes were not yet in anything like a lucrative profession, and that the effort-to-reward ratio was still brutally out of balance. The episode closes with that same mix of affection, exactitude, and half-remembered detail that runs through the rest of the show.
