The Startup Ideas Podcast · Greg Isenberg

I Built an Entire App in Only 52 Min with Codex & Idea Browser

·53 min·4 clips
Alex shows how he scrapes Facebook and Reddit to find pain points and build ideas with unfair advantage.
No idea whatsoever is the starting line. Alex keeps the setup plain: find a business idea in Idea Browser, then ask OpenAI's Codex to turn it into an app. Greg gets the disclosure out early. He built Idea Browser for himself, with ideas feeding incubation, investing, and acquisitions, and he thinks the same workflow can help other people too. Then the screen share does the work. The episode becomes a live build, with the hosts moving from idea picking into an MVP request inside Codex. The stack is specific. Greg asks Codex to build from a PRD in project.md, use Next.js on the frontend, and use Supabase for the database. The model choice becomes the fun part. Greg usually picks Codex high because he wants the smartest agent available, even if it takes longer and uses more tokens. Then he talks himself down. After watching the Codex product manager use low during a live OpenAI Dev Day app build, he decides low is enough for this MVP. The jokes do a lot here. High is premium gasoline and Mountain Valley water. Low is tap water, but tap water still gets you there. Under the bit, the lesson is pretty sharp: a clear brief, speed, and iteration may matter more than always reaching for the heaviest model. Codex builds in the background while Greg shifts into the cloud flow and explains what cloud agents can handle. The ending gets less technical, but it stays practical. Try the workflow for a few minutes, then make it social. Friends become the accountability layer. Nobody wants to arrive in the group chat empty-handed after losing the day to scrolling.

As heard by us

A practical build session where idea hunting turns into an app.

The episode tracks Greg and Alex as an idea search gives way to Codex turning a `project.md` brief into a Next.js and Supabase MVP, and the main draw is hearing the choices unfold in real time: model selection, local versus cloud, and the tradeoff between speed and polish.
