Sen. Paul Bettencourt on Restoring Free Speech in Texas

·34 min·1 clip
Over 140 teachers celebrated an assassination in their public statements.
Sherry Sylvester welcomes Senator Paul Betancourt, who represents Senate District 7 and chairs the local government committee. She opens by asking about his appointment to the joint committee on Freedom of Speech and Civil Discourse in Higher Education. The talk also reaches into the Higher Education Working Group. Betancourt puts the discussion inside the larger machinery of Texas government. He points to the state’s recent property tax relief as part of that record. He says higher education decisions run through finance, exceptional items, and public oversight. The conversation then turns to what universities should actually be for. Betancourt says student attainment matters. He says research matters. He says those institutions should be judged from a public perspective, not just a political one. Sylvester argues that the goal is not to create conservative universities. Betancourt answers that the goal is open inquiry. He says students should be able to say what they think. He calls it a chilling sign that surveys show more than half of students feel afraid to speak. He says that condition has to be eliminated. He argues that public universities are, on average, more left than right. He says that reality should not be used to silence dissenting students. He objects to course material he sees as age-inappropriate, including transgender theory for five-, six-, and seven-year-olds. He points to a Texas A&M course he says was shut down three times before the dean and department head were fired for failing to tell the administration. The interview ends with a blunt warning that universities drift when they spend more energy on ideology than on education, freedom, and the work students are actually there to do.

A Texas campus-politics conversation about free speech, governance, and who gets to set the terms of inquiry.

This episode tracks Texas higher-education politics through Sherry Sylvester and Sen. Paul Bettencourt, who argue for open inquiry, civic seriousness, and a university system measured by student attainment and research rather than DEI.
