The Second Studio Design and Architecture Show

#398 - Erin Stetzer, Founder and Director of Erin Stetzer Homes

·1 hr 27 min·5 clips
Erin Stetzer became a custom home contractor in Houston despite having almost no construction background as a kid.
The episode is an interview with Erin Stetzer, hosted by David Lee and Marina Bourderonnet. Erin explains she grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, as the oldest of seven kids with no family in construction. Her only early exposure was walking frames in a new neighborhood as a child. She played Division I basketball at Fairfield University, studied finance, and had internships at Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers before briefly pursuing professional golf. She moved to Houston, met her future husband Alec, a builder, and decided to switch careers because she liked the idea of wearing running shoes and getting immediate feedback. She worked as a superintendent for David Weekly Homes, learning production building. After having her first child, she started her own company just before the 2008 market crash, which drained their savings while they had two spec homes and a newborn. She and Alec created a family system where she woke at 2:45 AM to work and be home by 3:30 PM for the kids, while he focused on childcare. Erin says it took 10 years of resilience, learning, and seeking out top architects to build her business. A turning point was a project with Seattle architects Suyama Deguchi Peterson, a Japanese contemporary home that required learning new techniques like shou sugi ban. She discusses her business rules: two projects per manager max and an eight-mile radius in Houston. She uses subcontractors but organizes them into micro-teams that coordinate to avoid conflicts. The hosts and Erin explore topics like pre-construction agreements to avoid bidding pitfalls, budget conversations with clients, and the hierarchy of design elements. Recently, Erin started offering virtual consulting and owner's representation services, helping clients set up projects correctly from the start. She also shares her effective Instagram presence, where she posts educational construction clips that have helped attract clients.
