Positioning and Sales Pitches That Win: Insights from April Dunford

·42 min·2 clips
IBM's pitch used value first, then features, and started with a point of view on the market.
April Dunford joins with a direct, practical angle. She explains that her background spans 25 years as a repeat VP of marketing and, at times, running sales or inside sales teams. That experience shapes how she thinks about pitch structure. The conversation keeps coming back to the gap between listing features and explaining why a buyer should care. She uses sales enablement as the clearest example. A tool can host content, organize training, and let reps move through courses. That is useful, but it still is not a reason to choose one vendor over another. The real question is whether the product helps improve outcomes like time to first deal and time to quota. To answer that, she says you need enablement data and Salesforce data together. Without that proof, the product sounds like a CMS or an LMS with a different label. That blurs the category. It also makes the seller's job harder. So she flips the sequence. Start with the insight. Start with why the problem matters. For a head of sales enablement, that means naming the cost of every day a rep is not making quota. From there, the seller can walk through the available options. One option is a plain content system. Another is a more structured course and certification flow. Neither one automatically proves the work changed sales performance. The stronger pitch makes measurement part of the story from the beginning. That way, the buyer hears urgency, accountability, and a real reason to believe.

April Dunford makes positioning feel usable in the middle of a sales call, not just in a workshop. She shows how a feature-by-feature pitch blurs a product into the usual CMS-or-LMS comparison, then resets the frame around the buyer's real job: helping reps reach quota faster…
