From Doubt to 2000 Students - with Andi Barney

January 7, 2026·1 hr 20 min·5 clips
Andi Barney defied industry experts who called her sewing machine repair training idea 'stupid'—now she has over 2000 students.
There were plenty of people telling Andy this would not work. She heard it again and again: teaching home sewists to service their own machines was asking for trouble, especially once computerized equipment entered the picture. For a while, she believed them. The shift comes when she admits she still did not see herself as a professional, even though she already had knowledge other people badly needed. Then the numbers get hard to wave away. Her first program launched in August 2021, and the Sewing Dock Academy now has over 2000 students in the program. Sam keeps the frame simple. Andy is selling a class, yes, but she is also helping women maintain their machines and training people for a second, third, or even fourth career in service. The conversation has a loose shop-counter feel. A practical question about whether the quilt store came before the machine work turns into a story about friendship, illness, timing, and need. Andy did not set out to own a quilt shop. While she was training with mentors, a friend bought a long-running Atlanta quilt shop and then became seriously limited by an autoimmune response tied to fabric and other everyday exposures. The shop still had to stay alive. After a dinner conversation, Andy stepped in, trading help with the store for space to build her service shop there. That became co-ownership. It feels less like a tidy business plan than the way craft businesses often happen. Sam keeps coming back to abundance. Their bit about work not being pie, not being a finite resource, becomes the episode's warmest little business sermon. They still laugh about hoarding. By the end, Andy is blunt about marketing as the business hamster wheel, with Sam joking that if anyone figures out running on Google, they should bottle it.
