Always Learning and Experiencing - with Latifah Saafir

October 29, 2025·1 hr 3 min·5 clips
How did a random blog comment lead Latifah Saafir to co-found the explosive Modern Quilt Guild?
Play is the hinge. Latifah Saafir keeps coming back to a plain idea: quilters have to try things, stay teachable, and learn from people who came before them, even when the room is not their natural crowd. She does not flatten the modern quilting split into a tidy lesson. Some of the tension was manufactured. Some of it gave both sides real energy. Her answer is practical: sit in the room, even a very traditional one full of Civil War reproduction fabrics, and take what is useful. Sam gives that story room. The conversation lets quilting history, guild identity, and business practice bump into each other instead of sorting them into clean boxes. Then Sam turns the question back toward the business. What changes once it has run long enough that the owner can stop doing every possible thing? Latifah answers from life, not brand polish. She began with patterns and rulers built for the quilting industry's usual distribution channels. Lately she has tested direct-to-consumer releases first, because they give her more control and more contact with the people who care about the work, even if the industry has opinions. The close feels like shop talk in the best way: get out of the echo chamber, listen to wise colleagues, and compare notes.
