591 | Saikat Chakrabarti: Building a New Consensus - How to Move America from "Failure Mode" to "Mission Mode"

Chakrabarti: ICE is a loyal paramilitary for Trump and cannot be reformed — former DHS Democrats agree.
The frame is narrow on purpose. Marshall says this is not campaign promotion, even though Chakrabarti is running in the San Francisco race to replace Nancy Pelosi. The episode is really about New Consensus, the Green New Deal lineage, and the difference between politics that manages language and politics that names what it wants to build. Marshall says Chakrabarti has been on his guest list since The Realignment launched in 2019, so the campaign is almost beside the point. The center of the conversation is the political center itself: why it often gets very good at testing phrases before it gets clear about goals. Immigration becomes the test case. Chakrabarti argues that a pro-immigration, expansive mindset only works if it comes with an economic program that lets people feel the country is expanding with them. His family story gives that argument some bite. His father, a poor refugee in India, met an American immigration office in Calcutta where a staffer sold him on the American dream and pushed him to apply for a visa. Chakrabarti keeps the story from turning too shiny by joking that the old twenty-dollar version became eight dollars after his father corrected him. The nostalgia has an economic spine: wages, living standards, the moon landing, the interstate highway system, and a confidence that made recruiting people from abroad feel normal. Then the machinery of politics gets in the way. Marshall brings up how broad support in 2016 did not erase the lesson of Eric Cantor's 2014 primary loss to Dave Brat. Low turnout is the warning label. Big moods can still get squeezed by primaries, factions, and incentives. The ending lands on a practical note: write the plans, build the libraries of ideas, and do that work before the moment demands it.

As heard by us

A grounded conversation about turning left policy ambition into a governing story that can survive political reality.

The Realignment uses Saikat Chakrabarti's New Consensus project to ask what political ambition is for: why moderates can mistake polling for purpose, why the left can underrate pragmatism, and what it would mean to move America from failure mode to mission mode.
