Adventure Encore: A Volcano Adventure, Part 2

·37 min·2 clips
An earthquake hits inside the lava tube as Kalama warns Kilauea could erupt and overflow the crater.
The encore drops back into the second half of the volcano adventure. The Reading Bug welcomes Reader back, and Kalama, a volcanologist, keeps guiding the group through the Puna Rainforest toward a lava tube. Inside the cave, the show slows down long enough to name what is on the walls and ceiling. They spot shark-teeth stalactites, and the word gets spelled out and explained as a formation that hangs from the ceiling. Stalagmites are introduced as the matching formations on the floor. Then the group stops at lava roses, described as rare shapes made when lava from below fills up and bubbles through a small opening on the floor. Bug wants to see actual flowing lava. Kalama reminds everyone that they need to turn around if they are going to make it to the summit to see the lava flow today. Bug keeps pushing to move faster. Lauren wants to stay longer in the tube and keep learning. She says she is too tired to race back up the chain ladders. The disagreement sharpens into a blunt argument about who is being selfish. Then Lauren trips. At first she thinks she is fine. The injury turns more serious when she realizes her ankle is twisted and starting to swell. She can no longer stand on it without pain. The adventure shifts from geology to getting back out safely.
