The Psychology of Athletic Excellence w/Dr. Alex Auerbach

September 11, 2025·55 min·5 clips
LeBron spends over a million dollars a year on recovery, but we rarely talk about that part of athletic excellence.
Relationships come first. Auerbach ties high performance to the people around an athlete, not as a nice extra, but as part of how the whole thing works. He pushes the point beyond sports too: high performers in any industry still need relationships that help them feel supported and able to look back on a life that felt well lived. Coaches are central to that argument. The athlete-coach relationship gives the episode its clearest example, because coaching can steady someone when the work gets ugly. Team sports make that easy to see. Players rely on one another for performance, but also for the motivation to stay in it when things get hard. Individual sports do not get a pass. Auerbach brings up Wimbledon, boxing, and UFC to show that even supposedly solitary competitors keep looking to coaches while the contest is still happening. The support can be practical, emotional, or both: perspective, motivation, and the feeling that someone has your back before you even know you need it. Dominance is the interesting wrinkle. The host names the tension between the relational side of performance and the urge to beat an opponent, especially in sports, where dominance is openly prized. The episode does not treat those as clean opposites. It moves toward a messier answer: great performance may need both. Near the end, Auerbach's work circles around presence: staying in the game, staying fully there, and being ready when the moment gets big. The closing idea keeps greatness within reach. High performance is not reserved for a chosen few, but it does ask something of the person trying to answer the call.
