Best of 2024- Reclaim Yourself w/ Emma Seppala

January 3, 2025·47 min·4 clips
Emma Seppala shares that 80% of millennials believe they're not good enough in most areas of life.
Feeling is the first problem. Emma frames modern life as a loop of doing and consuming, the kind that can pull people away from the emotions they need to feel. Scott puts that under the word sovereignty. In his setup, sovereignty means noticing how people hand themselves over through emotions, mind, relationships, intuition, and the body. Their rapport is easy. Scott mentions that he has known Emma since grad school, so the conversation has a relaxed, collegial warmth before it turns practical. And it does turn practical fast. Emma talks about research for students and says the breathing group had the strongest impact. Her point is that the mechanism is bodily before it is cognitive. Anxiety often lives in the body, and when the body is revved up, the mind has a harder time using new information. Scott asks for something listeners can try. Emma separates the longer researched protocol from a simpler practice she can teach right there. The instruction centers on the exhale. Inhaling raises heart rate; exhaling slows it. So longer exhales become a direct way to work with the body's state, without turning the whole thing into a complicated wellness project. Scott then makes it personal. He remembers Emma teaching him something that helped with flying anxiety, which gives the practice more weight than a neat tip dropped into the middle of a conversation. The closing widens out. Emma says positive relational energy can be trained, and that it can strengthen personal relationships as well as work relationships. She ties it to values, how a person lives, and the ability to have a positively energizing relationship with oneself. Scott clearly enjoys that phrase. The episode lands as a warm, usable conversation about reclaiming agency by listening to the body, training attention, and relating from a steadier inner place.
