Tyler, The Creator - CHROMAKOPIA - Album Review

November 6, 2024·26 min·2 clips
We're recording during an election with no results yet, talking to a future America with a new president.
The timing is strange. They are recording before the election result is known, so the cold open plays like a small time capsule for the person hearing it after the fact. Nobody knows anything yet, and that gives the episode a funny, loose edge before the album talk settles in. Tyler is the reason they are there. The album does not hit them like a straight rap showcase. It feels more planned than that, like Tyler came in trying to make one very specific thing. Call Me If You Get Lost is the reference point. Next to that one, this feels less about bars and more about mood, theme, production, and emotional weight. The dad material gets their attention. They hear Tyler going back to old anger, but the writing sounds cleaner and more grown now. The production takes a second to meet them where they are. One host needs more time with it because the sound is so odd, but the reaction is still respect, not confusion. It is not top-three Tyler for everyone, though the praise keeps piling up as they talk through Sticky, Darling Darling, No Touchdown, the Schoolboy Q track, Take Your Mask Off, and Saint Chrome. They also touch recent Westside Gunn and DJ Drama, plus a Freddie Gibbs album they have only partly sat with. Then sports crashes the ending. Chiefs confidence, Super Bowl talk, and a future playoff watch all land on the couch with the music.
