Easter clips: Melvin Edwards

April 2, 2026·48 min·3 clips
Edwards says he used wall-hung reliefs to play with the metaphor of hanging and lynching.
The episode begins in mourning. Tyler Green marks Edwards's death, then sets the archival 2015 interview beside the Nasher retrospective Melvin Edwards Five Decades. He keeps the frame exact, with Catherine Kraft, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Whitney barbed-wire installation, and later stops at Rutgers and Columbus all in view. Edwards talks through the materials. A yellow work with machetes, wrought iron fencing, and a loose chain opens into a discussion of line, floor, and weight. Green then asks how the early Lynch Fragments differ from the pieces Edwards made after returning to the form. Edwards does not flatten the answer. He remembers compact, often symmetrical early works, including Some Bright Morning, then talks about later reliefs that grew wider and doubled in size. Zimbabwe comes into the story. Working outside with stone carvers in 1988 and 1989 seems to have changed the scale and loosened the expression, though Edwards is careful about saying so. The conversation keeps moving outward: chain, symmetry, relief, and metal lead to Zimbabwe, Benin, continuity, debt, and visual inheritance. Benin arrives softly. Edwards describes an obligation answered through continuity, not imitation. Green ends simply, with congratulations on the retrospective and Edwards hoping to meet beyond the little plastic box.
