Sabine wakes to find three emotionless townsfolk staring at them in the dark.
LINGERING is a fiction episode of The Mistholme Museum, a horror anthology podcast presented as an audio museum tour. The narrator addresses the listener as a visitor examining exhibits, with each item serving as an entry point to a longer horror narrative. This episode's exhibit is a weathered welcome sign from a forgotten town called Havenbrook -- a once-promising small city that never grew, was bypassed by railroad and highway development, and now barely exists as a dot on a map. The story follows Sabine, a twentysomething who inherits the family business after their parents' death and receives an unexpected letter from their estranged younger sister Martha, asking for help from Havenbrook. The atmospheric horror builds gradually: Sabine's first impressions include shifting shadows, deserted streets, a subtle wrongness in the air that catches in the throat, and businesses either boarded up or barely lit. The locals, however, are warmly welcoming -- almost suspiciously so -- starting with a bartender who appears silently behind the bar and insists the beer is on the house, then flashes an unreadable emotion as Sabine leaves. Night falls as Sabine navigates to Martha's address, is struck by a coughing fit from the air, and is then greeted by a sobbing, elated Martha. Their reunion introduces the central horror premise: Martha has been in Havenbrook long enough to be absorbed by it, and despite knowing something is deeply wrong with the town, she struggles to articulate why she cannot leave. The episode is slow-burn atmospheric horror in the tradition of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, using environmental wrongness and social uncanniness rather than explicit violence. The audio tour framing device adds a second layer of unease, with the guide's neutral tone occasionally hinting at its own hidden nature.

As heard by us

A museum tour that gradually hardens into social pressure and midnight unease.

LINGERING turns a museum audio tour into a slow pressure trap: a constant guide, exhibits that cannot be touched, and a town whose warmth never quite feels right.
