Olivia Graham's father waits alone in a pub car park to hand over cash for a stolen Da Vinci painting.
Episode 5 of The Missing Madonna covers the climactic handover day in the recovery of the stolen Da Vinci painting the Madonna of the Yarnwinder. Host Olivia Graham opens with her father Robbie sitting alone in the car park of the Child of Hale pub near Liverpool, waiting for the gang holding the painting. The agreed price had shifted repeatedly: from a £2 million reward to a £700,000 upfront demand, then down to £350,000, then settled at £500,000 — £350,000 in cash plus a £150,000 banker's draft. Recovery agent Marshall spent the most stressful week of his life raising the money, exploring syndication with high-net-worth clients before finding an alternative lender who agreed to be repaid within the week plus a £35,000 return from the reward. Marshall walked into his bank, explained the transaction in full, and navigated the Proceeds of Crime Act obligations before arranging a security van loaded with £350,000 in £50 notes. The painting's transport was also planned carefully: Marshall prepared Egyptian cotton blankets, a case, and a detailed instruction sheet covering how to carry the fragile work upright without vibration or atmospheric changes — notably, the sheet never mentioned the Madonna or Da Vinci by name, a deliberate precaution. On the morning of the handover, Robbie collected a to-do list and a route map from Marshall, but Marshall's directions to the JC Construction industrial estate in south-east Liverpool were wrong. Robbie got lost, causing cascading delays: he kept calling Marshall, Marshall kept calling the security van to push back the delivery time, and middleman Jay kept calling Robbie for status updates. When the security van and Robbie finally met, tension boiled over: the van was releasing only £20,000 at a time through a shutter, so Robbie demanded the full doors be opened and loaded the cash into his Jaguar himself. Marshall photographed the entire transfer as an audit trail. Robbie then drove to Hale Village, a small community south-east of Liverpool chosen by the gang for its lack of tall buildings, multiple escape routes from the pub, and a car park invisible from the road. Olivia visits the Child of Hale pub in the present day and notes how well-suited it is for a covert exchange. Robbie arrived in the afternoon, in the rain, and sat waiting. Loss adjuster Mark Dalrymple acknowledged that what Robbie was doing was 'not for the faint-hearted' and declined to confirm whether he'd ever done the same. Art detective Arthur Brand said he would never have taken such a risk and estimated a hundred-percent chance the gang would run off with the money. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Robbie waits alone.

As heard by us

A tense handover episode where the logistics are nearly as fraught as the theft.

The episode leans into the handover, putting the painting, the cash, and the lonely car park in the same frame. Its tension comes less from any grand twist than from the ordinary work around the deal: a route printout, a security van schedule, and wrong directions that keep…
