DUNE: PART 2

March 15, 2025·2 hr 15 min·5 clips
A film so dense with story it feels crushed into insufficient screen time.
Steve Michaels opens episode 357 with a full house. The crew is all there: Jeff, Mark, Ken, and Brian. They kick off with a Dune style greeting and then settle into the movie talk. Steve starts running through the cast and gives up on finishing the list because the movie is packed. Timothy Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Stellan Skarsgard, and Zendaya all come up in the conversation. That giant cast becomes part of the point. The panel keeps circling the question of whether the sequel tells the story cleanly enough. One voice says the movie did not need reinventing or stretching. It should have just told the story. Another voice says the film feels rushed and never quite reaches the epic scope the book had. That complaint keeps coming back as the talk moves forward. The cast choices get some sharp attention too. A few roles are called miscast outright. Christopher Walken is one of the names that gets singled out. Zendaya also catches heat. One speaker compares her Chani to Sean Young's version in David Lynch's Dune and says the older take worked better, even if the bar was low. Still, nobody on the panel wants to pretend the movie does not look good. The cinematography gets praise. The group keeps treating the movie as a beautifully shot film even while arguing with the adaptation choices. Box office talk eventually joins the discussion. They mention the film making about 715 million worldwide. They also mention a break even number around 500 million. That leads into the news that Dune 3 is moving up and may start principal photography earlier than expected. The tone stays casual and argumentative the whole way through. The crew keeps trading remarks, little corrections, and side comments instead of locking into one polished take. By the end, Steve lands on a seven. The episode closes the way this show likes to close, with the room sounding like a group of movie people who have actually sat with the film and are still sorting it out.
