Episode 7 - Tyler

January 17, 2024·57 min·4 clips
Lying on a fishing pier after midnight swimming, Wren tells Tyler and Janet she cannot have children due to scar tissue, and that the world feels like hands pulling her down into the earth.
Tyler cannot pin down the first moment. He only knows Wren has become impossible to escape, a dark pull he pictures as falling into water and waiting to drown. The memory comes after violence. Wren stays calm after the assault, while Tyler watches police, teachers, and classmates shift around what happened. The official word is self-defense. That keeps charges away from Wren and sends Colt, wearing an eyepatch and exposed through his home life, into foster care elsewhere in the state. No one comes for revenge, but that does not make anything feel clean. Fear has already moved into the hallways and every adult look. Tyler still defends her. He knows Colt hurt people, and Janet recognizes the pattern from the men her mother brings home. Janet becomes Wren's shield, shutting down whispers when she can. Still, protection cannot stop the staring or return an ordinary school year. Summer closes in around Wren. Her adopted parents keep her home, scared. Tyler gets one night with her. He and Janet sneak her toward the lake near her family's farm, where the water almost makes the scene gentle. On the pier, jokes about swimming and bodies sound like teenagers trying to act normal. It does not hold. Janet folds inward when dared, and the night carries damage that friendship and lake water cannot rinse away.
