Episode 4 - Michael

December 6, 2023·38 min·2 clips
Michael is chained by a metal collar to a church wall, muzzled like a dog, with iridescent fly-like eyes glowing green and magenta from sunken sockets.
Catherine studies Sister Genevry. The older woman's posture still has power, even after time has made her smaller and grayer. Anger reaches Catherine first. It tightens her fists and mouth before any explanation can make the room bearable. Then she sees Michael. He is chained, held in a crude muzzle, and marked by waxy patches, heavy features, and insect-colored eyes. Everything closes in around him. Incense, cleaner, sourness, and saliva make his suffering too physical to keep at a polite distance. Catherine asks what anyone should ask. Why is he restrained? Why was he struck? Why does Sister Genevry talk as if captivity were mercy? Sister Genevry stays calm. She calls Michael helpful, violent, tortured, pained, and innocent, and every word sounds like another lock. Breakfast waits in the kitchen. Cornmeal mush, coffee, wood smoke, lard, and dried herbs pull Catherine back into a childhood space she knows too well. The meal does not soften the horror. It makes it worse, because this room can still turn abuse into routine care. Michael becomes the wound in the open. His chained body shows the distance between Sister Genevry's holy tenderness and the force she will use. Catherine does not accept the story. Her questions keep pushing against lost children, mountain pain, and obedience until Michael feels less like a mystery than evidence.
