LST FAVES: Postpartum House Arrest

April 8, 2026·44 min·3 clips
Linda Chan escaped communist China by floating two and a half miles across Shenzhen Bay on a child's inner tube, nearly drowning.
Jessica only wants to wash. She has been through labor, given birth, and gone four days without a shower by the time she gets home with her daughter. Jessica gets a wet rag instead, plus a very small idea of what recovery is supposed to be. The power shift is uncomfortable and funny. Jessica is a mother now, but her own mother still seems to be running the room. Then breastfeeding takes over. Jessica is panicking, waiting for milk, trying to get her daughter to latch. Her mother shows up with a remedy: a vile black tea made with total certainty, the kind of certainty that makes refusal feel almost impossible. Jessica drinks the whole bowl. It is murky, pitch black, super bitter, and somehow bark-adjacent. The story works because the details are so plain and so loaded. A sore body, a hungry baby, a mother with rules, and everybody trying to help by taking charge. Frank does not flatten it into a neat lesson about culture or postpartum care. She stays in the room, where love and pressure are hard to tell apart.
