The Gospel According to Paul – Packed with Protein

February 2, 2026·39 min·3 clips
Pastor David returns after a month of severe back pain, revealing how it changed his view of global suffering.
Pastor David comes back. His left leg is still numb below the knee, and he laughs about being applauded just for standing up. Before he gets to Romans, he thanks people for praying and thanks the other Sunday teachers who carried things while he was out. That gives the sermon a warm, slightly self-deprecating start. Jesus comes first. From there, the sermon moves from personal devotion into mission: what Christ gives is not something to keep tucked away for private comfort. Paul becomes the example. As an apostle, he treats relationship with Jesus as a sending into the world. Then the sermon turns to gospel language. Pastor David names the familiar Christian story of Jesus dying for sins, rising from death, giving the Spirit, and returning for his people. He does not rush past it. He pauses on euangelium, lets the congregation try the word aloud, and explains its Greco-Roman sense as an announcement of victory. The tone stays conversational. A reference to Nick Caddy sharpens the point that gospel meant a report of political, military, and societal triumph. That gives Paul's message more weight. It is not only private comfort. It is news that Jesus has won something big enough to reorder hope. Pain is still in the room. The closing prayer names physical limits, tragedy, and horrific things in the world without smoothing them over. Hope stays there too, as Pastor David asks Jesus to help people believe, face suffering honestly, and remember the grandeur, beauty, holiness, triumph, joy, and glory revealed in Christ.

As heard by us

Romans is preached close to the ground.

Pastor David opens with his own account of a herniated disc, a rupture, and the slow return to standing, then moves into Paul, the gospel of God, and the claim that believers receive what Jesus gives and then pass it on.
