#411. Talking SPACE OPERA with Sharon Lee & Steve Miller

·47 min·4 clips
Sharon Lee and Steve Miller reveal how the term 'space opera' was once deprecated in publishing.
Craig starts with a term. He calls the episode sci-fi, catches himself, and settles on space opera because that is the word he wants to poke at with Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. They have earned the question. Their first novel came out in 1988, so Craig uses that long run to ask what the label has meant across the years. The conversation keeps changing shape. A pre-recording remark about space opera changing over time nudges Craig into asking what he has missed. Scope turns into the useful handle. Steve and Sharon talk about stories that get better when the camera can leave one hero, or one tidy crew, and follow other people for a while. Even red shirts get jobs. It is a joke, but it carries a real craft point: a big fictional world feels sturdier when the background people seem to have lives and work of their own. Television gives them an easy comparison. They talk through older episodic habits and later story-arc thinking, while pointing out that prose fiction was already used to long arcs and multiple threads. Continuity can also box a writer in. Steve warns that if every event has to follow neatly from the previous book, the series can start marching down a very narrow road. Their way around that is scale. One current book can look several hundred years earlier than another, which gives the series room to ask how things got where they are. The bakery tangent is not wasted. An editor asked for a Christmas story, their universe did not have Christmas, and the assignment turned into something closer to a Hallmark-shaped baker story. That detour says a lot about how they work. Worldbuilding is not a locked rulebook for them. It is a set of constraints that can still leave space for small, odd, useful stories. Craig keeps coming back to the label, and the episode becomes a craft talk about why space opera needs room to roam.

As heard by us
