Play From Your Heart: Loss, Identity & Resilience with Scott Martin

·1 hr 24 min·5 clips
The doctor tells Scott he lost 40 pounds of muscle after 30 days in a coma.
Chris opens with a little banter about the portrait behind Scott. Scott jokes that the room is full of the same sort of odd favorite faces. Then the talk turns serious fast. He walks through the life threatening illness that changed everything. He had been a soccer coach and, as the intro notes, a soccer player and athlete. Then he spent 30 days unconscious and woke up to a different world. From there, he has to rethink identity, leadership, and purpose. He talks about being fitted for hooks, and he says he could not stand that. Occupational therapy becomes part of the rebuild. Dressing, showering, shaving, and getting through the morning all take real effort. He also had to learn how to drive again. A friend pushed him into a vacant parking lot and told him to try. The car needed a spinner knob, then a U shaped tool, just so he could manage the controls. He was doing all of it by himself. That independence mattered, but it also made the loneliness plain. He brings up the breakup that happened before the illness and the way it opened the door from teaching into full time coaching. It ties back to pain, five adopted children, and the slow work of becoming independent again. The memoir lands on what it means to lead and live from the heart after loss.

As heard by us

A recovery story that stays practical, personal, and unsentimental.

Scott Martin's story lands less as a tidy recovery arc than as a study in identity under pressure: a former soccer player and award-winning coach wakes after 30 days unconscious, lives with permanent disability, and has to rebuild ordinary life one awkward step at a time.
