193: Getting All Up in Brian's Business

·48 min
Brian and Matt record from the Thrive Podcast Studio at Thrive Coworking Community in downtown Lindsay, Ontario at 18 Kent Street West. Brian opens by saying he is in a transition. The conversation starts there, with what is changing in his business and why it feels different now. He talks about doing a lot of personal development and therapy, and how that work is no longer staying personal. It is changing what he wants to build and where he wants to put his energy. Matt keeps the tone loose and curious. He jokes, then nudges, then asks the kind of follow-up that keeps Brian from drifting into safe, general answers. Brian says he wants to serve different kinds of people, from startups to more established businesses that need deeper marketing help. He also talks about teaching. Being in front of a group of 20 something year olds gives him energy, and he likes giving them practical things they can use. At the same time, that audience is not the same as the clients who can pay for fuller, longer-term work. Matt keeps bringing the pricing reality back into the room. They talk about how the most useful work is often also the least cheap work. Full coaching, StoryBrand work, and regular implementation can help a business grow, but they are not small-ticket services. Brian says he wants to be of service, and he means that in a broad way. He also admits that the broader the net gets, the harder it is to stay clear on what kind of business he actually wants to run. The conversation keeps returning to focus and mental energy. Brian says he has already cut a lot from his own list, and there is still more to remove. The two of them keep circling the same idea from different angles: help people build the business and life they want, not just pile on tactics. The closing turns playful again, with a plane metaphor that lands the point that simplifying is a choice, not an accident.
